Childhood Hearing Loss

Information About Early Detection(Diagnosis) of ChildHood Hearing Loss

Sound passes through the external auditory canal and forms a vibration on the eardrum with pressure effect. This vibration is transmitted from the eardrum to the inner ear via the middle ear bones. In these nerve cells, mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy and hearing is carried out by being transmitted to the brain through the hearing nerve.

Talking is the most used communication tool among humans. Babies learn to talk by hearing speeches in their environment. Normal speech development is possible with normal hearing.

Hearing loss prevents babies from speaking, and so, from learning language. The effect on speaking increases as the degree of loss increases, and as the understandability decreases gradually, it gets impossible to self-learn speaking.

Abstract thoughts cannot develop in children with hearing impairment since surrounding objects and individuals are only meaningful as images. A child that cannot communicate verbally can perform restricted information exchanges and the mental development declines, productivity regresses and the child fails in educational life since there is insufficient stimulus. A hearing-impaired child becomes irritable because he/she cannot express his/her feelings and wishes; cannot communicate his/her akin, turns in on him/herself and shows social maladaptation.

The earlier the diagnosis of hearing loss is made and the sooner the necessary treatment and follow-up is started, the better the speech and language development will reach normal, which will have a positive impact on the child's social, emotional, cognitive and academic development.

Our “Newborn Hearing Reference Center”, which is the first in Turkey among private hospitals, approved by the Ministry of Health, provides services to our patients in the multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment approach with the participation of specialists of Otorhinolaryngology, Audiology, Pediatrics, Radiology and Anesthesiology Departments. Infants and children that are admitted at our center with suspected hearing loss are examined and assessed; and if present, the degree and type of hearing loss are identified and appropriate treatment and rehabilitation methods are determined. Our aim is to detect hearing-loss in infants and children at early stages and to help them get the necessary treatments and follow-up in order to re-introduce them to their families and the community.
